The Consonant/Nucleus/Consonant (CNC) Test was developed to provide lists of monosyllabic words with equal phonemic distribution across lists with each list exhibiting approximately the same phonemic distribution as the English language (Lehiste & Peterson, 1959). The CNC lists were revised (Peterson & Lehiste, 1962) to eliminate relatively rare words and proper nouns.
The resulting 10 lists of 50 words (500 words total) contain monosyllabic words with a frequency of occurrence greater than four per million, as calculated in the Thorndike and Lorge word frequency tables (Thorndike & Lorge, 1944).
In each of the CNC tests, every word is preceded by the carrier word “Ready.” There are three practice words at the beginning of each list. The words within each list are separated by approximately two seconds of silence on the CD.
