The Hearing in Noise Test (HINT) (Nilsson, Soli, & Sullivan, 1994) was developed to provide a reliable and efficient measure of speech reception thresholds for sentences in quiet and in noise. The HINT materials consist of 25 equivalent 10-sentence lists (which also can be presented as 12 equivalent 20-sentence lists) and noise that is filtered to match the long-term average spectrum of the sentences.
The HINT was originally designed to determine the reception threshold for sentences (RTS) with an adaptive procedure in which noise is presented at a fixed level and the sentence levels are varied depending upon the accuracy of the listener’s responses. Here, the HINT sentence lists are presented at 65 dB(A) in quiet, or at a fixed SNR (+10 dB, +8 dB, +5 dB or +0 dB signal-to-noise ratio). The HINT sentences and the noise are presented from the loudspeaker that the listener faces.
