The HiRes 90K implant, also referred to as an Implantable Cochlear Stimulator or ICS, is composed of materials that have been thoroughly tested for biocompatibility. The implant includes a magnet and electronics.
The implant electronics are contained within a hermetically sealed titanium case with a removable magnet and telemetry coil attached and encased in silastic. The overall dimensions are approximately 28 mm wide by 56 mm in length.
The HiRes 90K System also features bi-directional telemetry. This allows the clinician to verify the integrity of the implanted electronics before, during, and any time after surgery. Information is sent from the implant back to the external components through the same inductive coupling that allows the sound signal to be transmitted from the external components to the implant.
The HiRes 90K is designed for easier surgical implantation and ideal for young children. With 3 mm of surgical drilling depth and smaller embedded dimensions, drilling is reduced significantly.
The silastic upper housing is soft and flexible and conforms better to the shape of the head. The low profile (2.5 mm) dimensions, enhanced by a beveled edge, make the implant less noticeable and less susceptible to skin erosion.
Under the silastic top rests a titanium electronics housing designed to protect the internal electronics from impact and trauma. A protective titanium ledge is also intended to prevent projection of the implant to dura under direct impact.
The electrode array exiting below the upper housing is a design feature intended in a smaller drilled channel for the electrode array.
The HiRes 90K high precision receiver and transmitter coil is made of 3-turn, gold wiring with platinum helix shielding. This innovative coil design enables the implant to receive data at 90,000 (90K) updates per second.
MRI-compatible at 0.3 Tesla and 1.5 Tesla with magnet removed.
The HiRes 90K’s name is derived from the powerful and versatile capability of its CII electronic platform that features 90,000 samples/second information update rate, 83,000 pulses/second stimulation rate, and 16 independently programmable output circuits. The HiRes 90K is also the only cochlear implant with built-in memory registers (256) that enable HiResolution® Sound Processing, current steering, and next-generation sound processing research.
The HiRes 90K features the most advanced sound processing electronics available. Its CII electronic platform provides patients with access to simultaneous, partially simultaneous, and non-simultaneous stimulation. Currently approved sound processing strategies include HiRes Fidelity 120™ (adults only), HiRes-S and HiRes-P, SAS, MPS, and CIS.
The HiRes 90K features advanced diagnostic electronics. High resolution Neural Response Imaging (NRI) provides clinicians fast recording time of the neural response to electrical stimulation with alternating-polarity artifact-suppression.
